History of Veliko Tarnovo
Veliko Tarnovo is one of the oldest settlements in Bulgaria, with a history dating back more than 5000 years. The city was capital of the Bulgarian Empire for over two hundred years. Centered around three hills, the ancient city hosts the remnants of the Second Bulgarian Empire.
The capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, Veliko Tarnovo’s old town offers much to travelers, like the fortress of Tsarevets and beautiful traditional architecture in the old town. The royal heritage of Veliko Tarnovo also includes one of best hotels in Bulgaria — the Bey House Boutique Hotel.
The building Bey House occupies dates back to 1864. The Bey House Hotel in Veliko Tarnovo is located in the former residence of the last Ottoman bey (governor) of Tarnovo. The hotel is perfectly positioned to explore the best things to do in Veliko Tarnovo’s old town, while being a haven of luxury and comfort.
Royal Heritage in Veliko Tarnovo Old Town
The royal heritage of Veliko Tarnovo is readily apparent at the Bey House Hotel. It’s easy to see how this sets it apart from other 5 star hotels in Bulgaria.
Each of the richly appointed chambers in this luxury hotel in Veliko Tarnovo bears the name of a different Bulgarian tsarina. The rooms feature lovingly curated memorabilia of their namesakes, as well.
Renovating the historic structure using the original building plans took four years. After completion, the opening of the Bey House Hotel was commemorated with a ceremony attended by Tsar Simeon II and Tsarina Margarita, the last king and queen of Bulgaria.
When Tsarina Margarita cut the ribbon at the ceremony, it cemented Bey House’s place as a unique Bulgarian 5 star hotel. The tsar and tsarina spent a night in Grand Chamber Margarita — a chamber which definitely earns its royal title.
Luxury at One of the Best Hotels in Bulgaria
The owner, a Veliko Tarnovo native, became inspired to develop a luxury hotel in Veliko Tarnovo after staying in a Moroccan riad. He was struck by the melding of traditional elements with modern luxury — and this 5 star hotel in Bulgaria succeeds at this, too.
Staying in Grand Chamber Margarita
Upon entering the Grand Chamber Margarita, it immediately felt palatial and rich. Coming into the chamber through the entry passage felt like entering a room in a palace. It’s definitely a room fit for a queen! The hand-painted gilded walls, antique furniture, plush rugs, and lighting all create the feeling that you’ve stepped back in time.
Every detail in the Grand Chamber Margarita feels luxurious, from the oak floors below to the beautiful crown molding above. Taking in the beauty of the room at our luxury hotel in Veliko Tarnovo never ceased to be pleasing to the eye.
But a Bulgarian 5 star hotel experience isn’t just about recalling the royal opulence of the past. Bey House provides guests with all modern amenities that you’d expect from a 5 star hotel in Bulgaria. The bed in our room was huge and cozy, the internet was fast, and the beautiful marble bathroom a treat for the eye.
Turkish Bath at Bey House Hotel
Spending so much time in Europe in fall and early winter this year made us really appreciate our spa time. We loved our private time in the Bey House’s Turkish bath!
We spoiled ourselves for a couple hours in the Turkish bath at Bey House. The bath, like everything else at Bey House, feels exclusive and luxurious.
The bath at the hotel is extremely private because it can be used by only one group of guests at a time. It’s the perfect way to get away from the world while at the foot of the Veliko Tarnovo fortress.
Dining at Bey House
Looking for the best Veliko Tarnovo restaurants? As one of the best hotels in Bulgaria, Bey House has a gourmet restaurant serving elevated Bulgarian cuisine.
We had an absolutely delicious meal full of flavor—certainly a highlight of our stay! The salads were beautiful and full of delicious fresh vegetables. I ordered the beef loin with port sauce, and Lauren, the carp. Both were cooked to perfection, and the sauces were truly delectable.
Breakfast at Bey House was also a wonderful way to fuel ourselves for a day of exploring Veliko Tarnovo. We enjoyed omelettes with fresh vegetables every day of our stay!
Final Thoughts on Bey House Boutique Hotel
We really enjoyed our stay in the Grand Chamber Margarita at the Bey House Hotel. Every moment spent in the beautifully luxurious room felt like a moment in the life of a royal. The lovingly renovated hotel perfectly recreates the grandeur of days of old.
