How Long Do You Ride the Camels For?

All Jaisalmer desert safaris with Trotters consist of at least 90 minutes of camel riding at a time, which is enough for you to get that Indian camel riding experience but not too much (compared to our 4 hour ride in Mongolia, which was way too long).

The camels with Trotters seem well-taken-care-of, healthy, and happy, which is no surprise given Trotters’ local origins and commitment to the desert community.

Trotters also cares deeply about protecting the local environment around Jaisalmer India. Our Jaisalmer Desert Safari: One of the Best Things to Do in India

We went on an overnight Jaisalmer camel safari with Trotters, culminating in a night spent out under the stars in a private corner of the Rajasthan sand dunes. After our departure from the golden city of Jaisalmer, India, we sped through the barren yet fascinating landscape of the Thar Desert to a peaceful oasis, undeniably one of the best things to do in India. Amazingly enough, our driver informed us that the large pond at the oasis was formed only by rainwater from the monsoons of over five months prior.

Desert Safari Itinerary

The itinerary of Jaisalmer desert safaris with Trotters is well-thought-out, taking visitors to some of the best places to visit in Rajasthan without too much driving time in between stops. After visiting the oasis, we drove through an abandoned “ghost village”, stopping at the abandoned Khaba Fort overlooking the village.

Exploring Ghost Village in Rajasthan

Ghost Village

While we enjoyed exploring the empty fort, our favorite part of this stop was venturing down into the ghost village, where we encountered an empty temple. We felt that this eerily quiet temple was one of the most unique places to visit in Rajasthan, as many places you go are full of tourists. Not this place, with only the quiet shushing of pigeons’ wings to keep us company here.

Find out why India was rated one of the top winter destinations by travel bloggers!

After exploring the ghost village, we made our final stop, where we met up with our Indian camel safari guide at the edge of the deep desert. Our guide was fantastic, providing us with tons of  intriguing information about life in the Rajasthan desert. He was also very curious about our lives in America, and we really enjoyed conversing with him on our camel safari in Jaisalmer.

Arriving At Our Desert Campsite

Riding through the sand dunes, we reached our private campsite in the late afternoon. Our driver had driven ahead to meet us at the campsite, and quickly proceeded to make some tasty pakoras and fried potatoes with chai for us to snack on as we watched the shadows lengthen over the wide expanse of the desert.

Campfire Dinner

As the sun continued to drop behind the horizon, our Indian camel guide and driver were hard at work cooking a fresh meal from scratch for us. With just a simple fire, they cooked a delicious meal, even making the chapati fresh for us. I couldn’t even cook a meal like that in a kitchen at home, let alone in the blackness of night on a Jaisalmer camel safari.

Sleeping Under the Stars

After stuffing our faces with chapati and dal, we found ourselves exhausted and ready for sleep. Nights in the desert can get a bit chilly, but Trotters provided more than enough warm blankets for us to be comfortable with. It was our first time sleeping outdoors, and it was an incredible experience. If you’re going on a Jaisalmer desert safari with Trotters, I highly recommend that you sleep under the stars for at least one night. There’s no better way to experience the utterly peaceful and still black desert night on your Indian camel safari.

We had just experienced glamping on the sand dunes in Thar, which was also incredible, but this experience was so unique, we will never forget it.

Breakfast and Return to the Town

The next morning on our Jaisalmer camel safari, we were provided with a quick breakfast, and then it was time to ride back. We rode for about an hour this time, but we didn’t mind that it wasn’t as long as the other ride. Riding on a camel for even an hour is tough on your body, so it’s smart that Trotters planned out the rides this way. We got back into the jeep and said goodbye to our guide, who disappeared into the desert as we zoomed back to Jaisalmer.

I would also add that Jaisalmer itself is a very unique city. So if anyone is intending to go on a desert safari I would highly recommend going to Jaisalmer not Pushkar or some other place that’s easier to reach.

Speaking of desert safari, I can recommend Real Desert Man. I went with them in May 2018.
