On Jeju Island in South Korea,  acclaimed throughout the mainland as the “Hawaii of Korea,” you’re never too far from a beach. In fact, the beaches and luxury resorts of Jeju Island inspire millions of travelers every year to make that pilgrimage from Seoul to Jeju (incidentally, the busiest passenger air route in the world). Visitors and locals are spoiled with choices from sprawling shores of powdery white sand to dramatic rocky beach edges and black sand landscapes. No beach, however, is more convenient than Iho Tewoo Beach, a quick tumble from the center of the island’s capital, Jeju City. 

 

Convenient Location on Jeju Island

Located a convenient bus ride away from much of Jeju City, Iho Beach can easily and quickly fulfill your beachy desires if you don’t feel like venturing too far from the city. An urban beach on the outskirts of Jeju Island’s capital, Iho may not boast the same striking shores as many of the other beaches on the island, but its proximity to the city makes up for that.
If you’d prefer to leave the city, we’d recommend Sagye Beach for its amazing view of Mt Sanbangsan, or this Hidden Beach of Jeju Island. Still, Iho Tewoo Beach is an excellent choice for those who don’t want to go far!


 

Clear Blue Water

Still, the color of the water at Iho Beach is always various shades of vividly colored blue, making for peaceful gazing into the water. Relax on the shore, then enjoy a meal at a sashimi restaurant and take in the night view.


 

Fishing on Iho Beach

Iho is home to a few breakwaters that make for perfect strolling avenues along the ocean. The breakwaters are a popular spot for local fisherman, who come here to catch sea smelt and other fish. You can hang your feet over the edge while watching the fishermen cast their long lines into the sea.

 

The Famous Horse Lighthouses

Another notable feature of Iho are its two lighthouses shaped like horses (though they look like llamas to us), which make for fun photo opportunities. In fact, many tourists on Jeju Island come to Iho Beach to view the lighthouses rather than the actual sand and sea here.

 

Plane-spotting

Since the beach is close to Jeju Island’s airport, the breakwaters make a good spot to watch planes ascending in takeoff. Try to count how many different airlines you can identify!

 

Boat Rentals at Iho Beach

Iho Beach has a small harbor, where boats can be rented for short fishing trips. These boats function as squid boats at night—you can tell a squid boat when you see its lighting (think 90’s Christmas lights on steroids). These lights serve to attract squid at night. Getting There

From Jeju-si Intercity Bus Terminal: take the 17 bus bound for Iho Beach. The bus leaves every 50-60 minutes.

 

 

With a quick afternoon in Jeju City, Iho Beach is a fantastic way to spend a breezy afternoon. Stop at one of the convenience shores a quick hop across the street, stock up on snacks and soju (Korea’s most popular alcohol, and sprawl out along the vivid turquoise coast (yes, it’s legal to drink in public in South Korea), perhaps after indulging in some famous Jeju tangerines or wandering around the O’Sulloc tea plantations? Iho Beach also hosts a popular campsite, with a little sprawl of forest and a tent area right off the sand. So whether you want an overnight stay outdoor-getaway without the hassle of traveling far from the city, or a briefer afternoon sojourn on the city shores, Iho Beach can certainly meet those needs.
