Living in Luxury at the Sofitel Hotel Luang Prabang
True to the Sofitel hotel line’s mission of blending French art de vivre with refined local touches, the Sofitel Luang Prabang is built from the former mansion of a colonial French governor from the early 1900s. This makes the Sofitel Luang Prabang one of the oldest hotels in the entire Sofitel collection.
The Sofitel Luang Prabang Laos hotel was remodeled into an all-suite luxury hotel just a few years ago, exuding French luxury and romance with impeccably manicured grounds, lush botanical gardens, and an amethyst-sparkling pool.
Make sure to watch our video coverage of our Sofitel Luang Prabang experience above!
The Suite Life
When we stayed at the Sofitel Luang Prabang Laos, we felt like we had so much more than just a hotel room. The 25 spacious suites that make up the Sofitel Luang Prabang feel more like comfortable, sophisticated homes than simple hotel rooms.
At the Sofitel Luang Prabang hotel, each suite has its own sleek private outdoor garden area, some suites with outdoor bathtubs and others with private pools.
Enjoying baths in our suite’s outdoor bathtub was one of our favorite parts of staying at the Sofitel Hotel Luang Prabang, each time more relaxing and luxurious than the last!

Luxurious, Thoughtful Touches
The highlights of our suite at Sofitel Luang Prabang Laos weren’t limited to its outdoor bathtub. In addition to the grand-sized outdoor bathroom, the suite also included an indoor bathtub and shower.
The indoor shower area (plus separate indoor bathtub) could be converted into an open-air bathing area, allowing us to appreciate the greenery of the garden while bathing.
We enjoyed getting ready for the day on the spacious counter, and loved the magnifying mirror! Thoughtful touches such as these make the Sofitel Luang Prabang Laos hotel our top choice of luxury Luang Prabang hotels.

Spacious and Elegant
The sprawling space of the Sofitel Luang Prabang Laos hotel offers ample room for minds and spirits to relax and truly soak in the elegance of the colonial mansion. In addition to its expansive bathing layout, our suite at Sofitel Luang Prabang had the most delightful bedroom and living area.
With natural light, chic, comfy couches, and elegant Laotian fabrics, the living area of the suite welcomes guests to make themselves at home.
Further, the comfortable bed provided some of the best night’s sleeps that we’ve ever had on our travels, making the Sofitel our favorite Luang Prabang accommodation.
Lush Botanical Gardens and Pool
The grounds at the Sofitel Luang Prabang are manicured in exquisite French detail and full of lush, exotic plants that create a perfect harmony of timeless elegance and Southeast Asian beauty. This is a five-star luxury Luang Prabang hotel, after all!
In our opinion, the best way to enjoy the rich lushness of the Sofitel Luang Prabang Laos is while taking a refreshing dip in the stunning and radiantly tiled swimming pool. It’s also definitely the best way to beat the heat of Luang Prabang Laos, and certainly a great thing to do in Luang Prabang with kids.
The combination of the glimmering swimming pool with the verdant grounds make the Sofitel Luang Prabang a delight to explore. And with the incredible Kuang Si Falls within reach as well, your stay in Luang Prabang will be filled with gorgeous swimming spots.
Fine Dining at Luxury Luang Prabang Hotels
As one of the best places to stay in Luang Prabang, the Sofitel Luang Prabang offers a range of renowned culinary options to satiate any appetite, making the Sofitel one of the best luxury Luang Prabang hotels.
With elegant Western options as well as refined Lao dishes, guests can delight in a variety of cuisines.
The Sofitel Luang Prabang Laos hotel has the Governor’s Grill restaurant on-site, and the 3 Nagas Restaurant in the city center easily reachable by the Sofitel’s complimentary shuttle service.
Governor’s Grill
No luxury hotel experience would be complete without fine dining, and the Sofitel Hotel Luang Prabang meets and far exceeds this necessity! Onsite at Sofitel Luang Prabang Laos, guests can enjoy the finest cuisine from all around the world at the Governor’s Grill restaurant and bar.
Boasting a perfect location near the pool and with a safari-style tent ceiling over the open-air dining area, Governor’s Grill has the perfect ambiance for a five-star dining experience.
We enjoyed the terrace seating for breakfast every day, indulging in made-to-order omelets and waffles, as well as a variety of quality breads, cheeses, fruits meats, fresh juices, coffees, teas and plenty of local Lao choices.
Governor’s Grill offers lunch and dinner in addition to its expansive breakfast, and we had the opportunity to gorge ourselves on a fabulous candlelit dinner.
The menu at Governor’s Grill proudly features a local buffalo tasting platter, with an accompaniment of several delicious sauces.
The buffalo tasting platter comes with skewers of perfectly cooked, juicy buffalo, bell peppers, and onions, a beautiful cut of buffalo steak, and an incredibly rich and flavorful buffalo bourguignon stew.
All selections were high quality, with fresh and local ingredients.
A supreme standout for us was the starter buffalo carpaccio, a perfect blend of European and Southeast Asian flavors.
The thinly sliced buffalo was so sweet and tender it melted in the mouth, and the basil olive oil chimichurri sauce was an absolute delight for the senses. The meal was a culinary standout among those at other luxury Luang Prabang hotels!

3 Nagas Restaurant
The Sofitel Hotel Luang Prabang also hosts fine dining offsite at the 3 Nagas Gallery and Restaurant. Find 3 Nagas in some of the oldest buildings in Luang Prabang, including one that housed the former royal ice cream parlor!
For a fine dining experience rivaling other luxury Luang Prabang hotels, 3 Nagas diners can enjoy the finest Laotian cuisine in Luang Prabang. If you want to experience traditional Laotian food on an elevated and refined level, then 3 Nagas is the place to do it!
Two tasting menus as well as a wide range of alacarte dishes serve up traditional Lao flavors with all the quality and refinement of 5-star dining.
We sampled the Lao Degustation tasting menu, starting off with Khaiphaen Jeund, deep-fried Mekong riverweed accompanied with a sweet and savory buffalo jam. The riverweed, reminiscent of toasted seaweed, was delightfully crispy and salty on its own, and paired with the buffalo jam the dish covered almost every flavor note: a perfect way to start the meal.

The Tomsom Paa fish soup with a satisfyingly sour and tangy broth, reminiscent of the Filipino dish sinigang, featured long mushrooms, tomatoes and greens, with fresh stalks of lemongrass and earthy galangal.
The Phanaeng Kai, a classic coconut chicken curry with lemongrass and mushrooms, was also incredibly satisfying, with each creamy bite leaving us wanting more.
The Khoua Sine Ngoua Sai Kathiem, deliciously juicy stir-fried peppery beef in oyster sauce, was an exemplary standout of what a stir-fry dish should be.
One of our favorite dishes of the night, Mhok Het, a dish of steamed mushrooms, minced herbs, and lemongrass in banana leaf, was unlike anything we’d ever tasted! The dish was reminiscent of spinach artichoke dip, but elevated to a different level of fresh flavors by the local herbs and lemongrass.
Finally came our dessert, a light yet sweet and creamy mix of tapioca and fresh fruit in coconut milk, and the perfect way to end the meal.
Reservations at 3 Nagas
3 Nagas is reservation-only, but dining is open to non-guests as well as guests of the Sofitel Luang Prabang.

Le Spa at Sofitel Luang Prabang Laos
There’s no better way to relax during your vacation at the Sofitel Luang Prabang than by pampering yourself at Le Spa, a fine spa distinguishing the Sofitel from other luxury Luang Prabang hotels.
Guests can choose from a variety of massage and treatment styles in the vintage, well-timbered elegance of the Sofitel’s antique colonial buildings.
The massages we received at Le Spa were most definitely the best massages we received throughout our whole 5-month trip throughout Asia, and we had several dozens! Cap off a day at the pool with a relaxing massage at Le Spa: it can’t get better than that!
