The Secret to Cheap Flights

TSA Carry-On Restrictions: What Can You Take on a Plane?

When traveling in the states, its essential to know all of the TSA carry-on restrictions, including TSA approved items you can put on your carry-on packing list.

Here are the TSA procedures you will need to follow when traveling on airplanes in the United States.

Use 100 oz bottles per TSA guidelines

TSA Liquids Rule

One of the most well-known part of the TSA carry-on restrictions is the Liquids Rule, otherwise known as the 3-1-1 rule (3.4 oz bottle or less; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic bag; 1 bag per passenger).

Every person is permitted to carry on one quart-sized ziplock bag of liquids (though this also includes aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes). Each container of liquid within the bag must be inside of a 3.4 oz (100 mL) or smaller container.

When going through security, you should take this ziplock bag out of your carry-on luggage and place it in a bin for an expedited screening process.

Other TSA Procedures

There are some other fairly routine TSA procedures you may experience when flying in the United States.

Unless you have TSA-approved laptop bag, you may be required to remove your laptop from its bag and place it in a bag for the screening process.

Additionally, shoes and jackets may need to be removed.

If you plan on bringing cameras with you, first confirm it’s safe for your camera model to go through airport scanners.

We’ve also discussed in detail the process of taking a drone through TSA in our traveling with a drone guide.

TSA Prohibited Items: Things You Can’t Take on a Plane

Bringing prohibited items on an airplane could potentially end up in questioning by security officials and even civil penalties of up to $12,856 for the worst violations. So make sure to follow the TSA rules!

For a detailed outline of all the must-know TSA prohibited items for carrying on the plane, consult our Things You Can’t Take on a Plane section!

The American aviator Charles Lindbergh wrote, “I realized that If I had to choose, I would rather have birds than airplanes.” And how lovely it would be to fly without airplanes and the tedious rituals of TSA rules and airport procedures, but our wingless reality is just one we’ll have to accept for the moment, even if that means accepting the necessity of airplanes and airport regulations.

Of course, you could bypass a good chunk of the time of TSA if you apply for TSA pre-check.

At the end of the day, TSA guidelines exist to protect us and ensure the safety of all fliers. And in doing your part to research the TSA carry-on restrictions you need to abide by, you’re already on your way to becoming a responsible plane traveler.

So go ahead, book a cheap flight, get your booty on over to the airport, and approach that daunting airport conveyor belt with confidence knowing you’re not breaking any TSA rules!
